Attacking duo Yáser Asprilla and Matheus Martins both notched their first goals of the FIFA Under-20 World Cup on Wednesday night (May 24), helping boost their respective nations’ tournament credentials over in Argentina.

Nineteen-year-old Asprilla - who scored one goal in 39 appearances for the Hornets during 2022/23 - finished off a well-worked team move to equalise for Colombia against Japan, before Tomás Ángel grabbed the winner for the South Americans with just over half-an-hour to play.

The 2-1 win seals Colombia’s progression to the Round of 16 with one game to spare in Group C, which will see them take on winless Senegal back in La Plata on Saturday (May 27, 10pm KO UK time).

In Group D, Matheus Martins played his part in Brazil’s emphatic 6-0 triumph over the Dominican Republic, as the five-time champions kickstarted their campaign after falling 3-2 to Italy in their first outing.

Martins - who came on as a 77th-minute substitute - scored the sixth goal of the night in injury-time, after Sávio, Marcos Leonardo, Pedroso, Giovane and Marlon Gomes strikes had opened up a healthy lead.

Level on points with Italy, second-placed Brazil will be looking to clinch a place in the knockout stage with victory over Nigeria - who have so far won two from two - at the Estadio Único Diego Armando Maradona on Saturday (May 27, 7pm KO UK time).

Back in the UK, defender Mattie Pollock completed 90 minutes for loan club Aberdeen as the four-time champions saw off St Mirren 3-0 in the Scottish Premiership.
