The waiting is almost over. Watford’s season begins this Sunday as the Golden Girls host Gillingham Women at Wealdstone FC (August 21, 2pm KO).

It’s been a busy summer at the club, with plenty of new additions to go alongside the regular faces that have signed new contracts.

With promotion back to the Barclays Women’s Championship the aim, Damon Lathrope’s side will be looking to get off to the perfect start at Grosvenor Vale.

These can be purchased in advance at the following prices: Adults - £5 | Concession (U16, 65+, Disability) - £3 | Watford Men’s/Wealdstone ST Holders - £1

On the day sales for Adults & Concessions will see the prices increase by £2, so we highly recommend booking in advance if possible.

The £1 price will remain unchanged on matchday, with you just having to show proof of your season card to gain entry.

The Match

The Golden Girls have started well in previous campaigns of the FA WNL Southern Premier Division, winning the last three opening games. Sunday will be the first time Watford have started with a home match since 2018, when Cardiff City were defeated 5-2.

There’s probably a good chance that you’ll be seeing a new face or two in the starting line-up against Gillingham. At the time of writing, the following signings have been confirmed: Bianca Baptiste, Annie Rossiter, Nicola Gibson, Emily Wallace, Melis Mehmet, Morgan Rogers, Scarlett Williams, Jade Bradley, Lois Edwards, Grace Garrad, Jacqueline-Anne Goldsmid, Allison Palisch, Kalani Peart and Poppy Wilson.

While not a new arrival to the club, there will be a different face in charge of the team, as Damon Lathrope takes the reigns as Head Coach.

His first game will be against the Gills, who will be hoping to build on last season’s sixth-place finish. We took an in-depth look into our opponents earlier this summer, which you can read here.

It was an entertaining encounter when the two sides last met, with Watford narrowly triumphing 3-2 at Rochester United back in October 2020. Expect entertainment again this weekend, too.
