It was a real team performance as the Golden Girls beat Bridgwater United 2-0 on Sunday (August 28). Centre-back Megan Chandler was understandably pleased with the result.

“Bridgwater made it hard, they pressed us in the second half and asked us questions,” she told watfordfc.com. “We ground out the result and if you want to be a winning team, you have do the stuff off the ball, the dirty stuff that teams sometimes don’t like doing.

“I thought we did that really well today. We’re now going home after a long journey and a long weekend happy.”

Over the course of the season, results will have to be earned in different ways. There’ll certainly be more free-flowing displays in 2022/23, but sometimes efforts like this, with a clean sheet, can be even sweeter.

“It has always been a difficult place to come,” said Chandler. “I think that it showed how hard the team worked to grind out the result, in the end we deserved to get another goal.

“There were a lot of positives even though it wasn’t necessarily how we wanted to play. It showed that we have another side to our game to bring if things aren’t going to plan.

“We always want to keep a clean sheet every week. You never know how the game is going to pan out, but today we were defensively very solid. We didn’t ever look uncomfortable in and out of possession at the back, so for the defence it was a very good day.

“We kept them in front of us rather than them going in behind, so that’s another huge positive for us as a defensive unit and the team in general. Sometimes that was something that we struggled with last season, so to start off positive in that area is good.”

Having made her 50th appearance against Gillingham on the opening day, Meg now has other milestones in her sights!

“Oh my gosh, it feels like it!” she exclaimed when asked about being part of the furniture. “It’s a huge honour, it’s nice to be at a club where I guess it’s home, Watford’s a great club and hopefully 50 more.

“People come and go, but we’ve never had a bad egg. The environment has always been fantastic since I’ve been here and that’s why people want to stay for the long term. I think that’s what makes the club very special and sets us apart from others.”

There’ll now be a bit of a break for the team, with the next confirmed game against Norwich City on September 11. The hard work certainly won’t be stopping anytime soon though.

“We’ve been working extremely hard in training, there’s not one session where we slack off, the girls have been fantastic,” revealed Chandler. “The intensity is like wow! It’s hard work, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

“It’s a chance for us to re-group. There are obviously girls who unfortunately couldn’t come today and girls that have not stepped on the pitch here even though they’ve travelled.

“For them, it’s another chance to prove themselves. We’re one big group here and moving forward I think that’s going to stand us in good stead.”
