People with intellectual disabilities continue to struggle with being accommodated and included in our communities, as many of us struggle to understand how to go about including them in society. Intellectual disabilities involve problems with general mental abilities such as learning, problem solving, judgement, communication and independent living.
A researcher at the Stellenbosch University has highlighted how Many South Africans living with intellectual disability don’t have opportunities to be part of community life, as they lack opportunities to learn, work or enjoy leisure activities and social connections like anyone else.
How can we go about better understanding people with intellectual disabilities and including them more in our communities? The team was joined by clinical social worker - Sean Zimunya.
