Back in 2015, #OscarsSoWhite was first mentioned on Twitter in response to the 20 acting nominations for the Academy Awards all going to white actors. The popularity of the hashtag put a spotlight on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for their lack of recognition of the work of non-white actors and artists. This resulted in a multi-year effort to diversify the academy’s voting body. But for Black women in the industry, little has changed.
