The planting of the flowering plum tree last week as a memorial to Brian Scipioni started
me thinking about what is really important to me. What do I value enough that I would
plant a tree to it? High on my list would be friendship.
Elbert Hubbard said, “A friend is one who knows you and loves you just the same.”
There is a Chinese proverb that says, “ A true friendship is like sound health, the value
of it is seldom known until lost.”
The power of friendship is enormous. If you are willing to trust another person with
your secrets and you are trustworthy enough to keep theirs, you are on your way to
establishing a life-long bond.
Abraham Lincoln recognized the value of friendship when he said, “Am I not
destroying my enemies when I make friends of them?
I believe the French philosopher Albert Camus said it wonderfully when he said, “Don't
walk in front of me, I may not follow; Don't walk behind me, I may not lead; Walk
beside me, and just be my friend.
Today, as you consider what you value enough to plant a tree to, consider valuing
yourself enough to be a really good friend.
