It’s that spooky time of year when the doors to the underworld open once more and unhappy spirits walk the earth. This month-long period, called ghost month in Taiwan and across much of east Asia, is a time filled with caution, taboo, and even outright fear, for in their month-long recess from the other side, the ghosts are free to cause mischief and even harm to the living. Today, we explore ghost month, it’s do’s and dont’s, and the elaborate activities planned to keep both the living and those who’ve passed on peacefully coexisting through its end.
