When Chen Chien-hao was growing up, no one would have guessed he’d one day become the maker of award-winning wines. For one thing, the Taiwan Chen grew up in had only two types of wine available, neither of them exactly good. Only the state could legally make wine. Then there was the geography he had to work with. Taiwan straddles the tropics. It gets seasonal storms and has a hot, damp climate that doesn’t exactly call to mind any of the world’s famous wine regions. Still, Chen moved to France and mastered an art form he could still have been arrested for practicing back home. He’s since returned home, though, and created Taiwanese vintages that have won awards in ten countries. He joins us today for a look at his creations and his latest project- reviving the forgotten liquors of Taiwan’s past.
