The Tomb Sweeping Festival is one of Taiwan’s four big traditional holidays. When this holiday comes around each spring, many people visit the graves of their ancestors and tidy them up. And then there are people like the Hakkas, an ethnic Chinese minority with its own language and customs, who do their tomb sweeping months ahead of the rest. Sam is Hakka on his father’s side, and since tomb sweeping is only done for male ancestors, his family does tomb sweeping Hakka style. He’s hear to tell us about the tomb sweeping customs his family follows and the rapidly changing attitudes younger Taiwanese people like himself have towards tomb sweeping.
