In 2016, the Argentine filmmaker Marcos Rodríguez explored the lives of Taiwanese immigrants who had made his country home during a period of twenty years. Though many of these Taiwanese people have since left the country, Rodríguez remembers a time when they filled a section of Buenos Aires called the Barrio Chino, or Chinatown. He now plans to shoot a sequel in Taiwan, following the stories of some of those who have made their way back to the island. Andrea Wang, of RTI’s Spanish service hasn’t seen Rodríguez’s film about Taiwanese immigrants, but she certainly remembers the place and time he seeks to depict in it. She was only six when she came to Argentina with her Taiwanese family. Today, she is one of four Argentine nationals of Taiwanese descent at RTI’s Spanish department, a telling sign of the outsized role this group plays in the life of Spanish-speaking Taiwan today. She joins me in the studio today to share her story as an immigrant to Argentina and a returnee to Taiwan.
