When Tony Thamsir first came to Taiwan during the 1990’s, his home country, Indonesia, was relatively unknown here. He and some other ethnic Chinese Indonesians were among the first of their countrymen here, seeking a Chinese-language education forbidden back home, and ultimately fleeing ethnically-charged riots that targeted their families. These days, Indonesia has become hard to ignore. The number of Indonesians coming to Taiwan has risen sharply as thousands upon thousands of migrant workers and immigrants arrive. Despite all he and his family went through, Tony is still Indonesian to the core, and he’s made a career helping fellow Indonesians of all backgrounds adapt to life in Taiwan. Over the past two weeks, he’s given us an overview of who is coming here from Indonesia and why. He’s also shared the story of how he himself came to Taiwan. This week, he’s back for a look at what issues people from Indonesia still face in adapting to life here, and to finish telling his own story.
