They are mighty hunters that could easily be mistaken for house cats. They stalk across a huge chunk of Asia that cuts from Afghanistan to Indonesia and Korea. They are the traditional masters of Taiwan’s wild places too. But while their worldwide population is considered healthy, in Taiwan, they are in trouble, victims of over-development, and often, drivers who fail to brake in time. These are leopard cats, a species that Taiwan is learning to love. In large part, this is thanks to the work of groups like the Leopard Cat Association of Taiwan, a group dedicated to the protection of the species. One of the association’s leading members joins us today for a closer look at these creatures, the threats they face, and work to encourage their return to Taiwan’s wilderness.
