It is sadly common to hear of great art being stolen. But usually, art thieves stick to museums, and usually, they’ll go after works by big name artists. That’s why the 1980 theft of works by Taiwanese sculptor Wang Ye was so bizarre. First, there was the thieves’ choice of target: clay figurines adorning the walls of a rural temple.Then there was the fact that Wang Ye was pretty much unknown. Even the temple didn’t notice the missing sculptures until two days after the burglary. But it turned out that the thieves knew good art when they saw it. The 56 pieces they stole were sold abroad, apparently racking up a small fortune. In other words. Now, after missing for decades, some of the stolen works are back in the temple’s care, treasured as they’d never been before and housed in a specially built museum.
