The Formosan rock macaque is one of the most distinctive of Taiwan’s animals. Aside from humans, it’s the only primate native to this island. It was once listed as an endangered species, but these days, macaque numbers are healthy and stable. But as the Formosan rock macaque flourishes, interactions with humans increase, and often, not for the better. Clashes with farmers and tourists in particular seem to be unavoidable. Now, Taiwan’s Forestry Bureau is stepping in, developing ways to defuse conflict between people and their monkey neighbors. Bureau conservation expert Luo Youjuan is here today to introduce the monkeys and efforts to make peaceful coexistence more practical.
