Notice that in this chapter there is a lot of exposition. For example, we learn more about the relationships between characters. Here the writer is developing or building the relationships between the Greasers and Socs. There are conflicts emerging. The parentless family of  Darry , Sodapop and Ponyboy are actually trying to make it on their own.  We learn the relationship that Johnny has with his family.  We also start to learn more about the Socs.
