Starting with the city’s first Black music pirate station, BAD Radio, in 1987, he championed soul and funk at basements and blues parties when it was largely absent from mainstream clubs. Through the 1990s he worked at underground record shops Time Is Right and Bang Bang, while holding a long-running residency at Lakota’s legendary 1 Love house night — recently relaunched to wide acclaim.As founder of the much-loved Hot Buttered Soul night, Mike has played a vital role in shaping Bristol’s nightlife, supporting local talent and hosting major international artists.
