To become in charge of sth., to start leading the task, work, arrangement (often as a proactive measure).
To do sth. by yourself.
Не зря говорят — "если хочешь, чтобы дело было сделано хорошо — сделай его сам". Нужно было мне сразу брать все в свои руки, а не полагаться на других. — It is true saying — "if you want a thing well done — do it yourself". I should have taken everything in hand right at the beginning not relying upon somebody else.
