Exercise may support brain serotonin by changing how certain amino acids move through the blood, making it easier for tryptophan, a building block of serotonin, to reach the brain.
NorepinephrineNorepinephrine acts both as a stress hormone and as a brain messenger. Exercise can increase norepinephrine activity, especially during high-intensity interval training and sustained aerobic exercise. Over time, this response may help the brain and body become more resilient to stress.
Gamma-Aminobutyric AcidGABA, or gamma-aminobutyric acid, is the main calming neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. It slows brain activity and helps regulate the nervous system. Cardiovascular exercise and mind-body activities may support GABA activity, which can help with stress management, anxiety reduction, and motor learning. Some studies have found short-term increases in GABA after intense exercise or yoga, though the exact effect can vary by person, workout type, and measurement method.
Brain-Derived Neurotrophic FactorBDNF, or brain-derived neurotrophic factor, is a protein that supports brain health by helping neurons grow, survive, and form stronger connections. It is sometimes described as “fertilizer” for the brain because of its role in learning, memory, and mood regulation. Exercise can stimulate signals such as lactate, irisin, and ketones that may encourage the brain to produce more BDNF. Aerobic activity appears to be one of the most effective ways to support this process.
EndocannabinoidsEndocannabinoids are natural lipid molecules made by the body that bind to cannabinoid receptors involved in mood, memory, pain, and stress regulation. Recent research suggests they may play a major role in the feeling often called “runner’s high.” About 30 to 45 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise can raise blood levels of anandamide, an endocannabinoid that acts on some of the same receptor systems affected by THC. This may help explain the calm, relaxed, or lightly euphoric feeling some people experience after exercise.
Why Exercise Matters for the MindSome people notice a lighter, calmer, or more pleasurable feeling after exercise, while others may not feel an obvious mood shift. Even when the effect is subtle, movement still triggers chemical responses in the brain and body that can support mental health.
