As we had reported on SABC Sport last week, Thulani Serero is back in the Bafana Bafana team after an absence of over a year. Serero was announced by head coach Stuart Baxter in the 23-man squad to play Nigeria in a crucial 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the FNB stadium next week (17 November). The Dutch based midfielder was last called-up by Baxter in October last year against Burkina Faso but expressed his unhappiness at not being played in four matches by Briton born coach. But Baxter was clear that Serero is returning to the team unconditionally. It’s not a secret that it took the intervention of the SAFA leadership for Serero to be brought back to Bafana after some within the FA had said the former Ajax Amsterdam player was banned from the national team. Baxter also believes that the former SA U23 international who has played full 90 minutes in 14 out of 15 matches for his Dutch Eredivisie club Vitesse Arnhem could play a critical role against Nigeria.
