Home advantage plays a critical role in African football and this weekend’s CAF Super Cup game between African Champions League winners Mamelodi Sundowns and CAF Confederation Cup champions TP Mazembe will be no exception. Champions League winners earn the right to be hosts and in the 24-year history of the CAF Super Cup only on three occasions the CAF Confed champions have won it. Speaking after training this morning, Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane, doesn’t want this edition to be an exception. The head to head between Sundowns and the Democratic Republic of Congo giants TP Mazembe makes for an interesting reading. There have been four meetings between the two sides, each team winning twice apiece and interesting on home soil. The games between the two teams are always tight and Mosimane has got a lot of respect for them. From their Champions League winning squad, the Brazilians are only minus the services of Keagan Dolly who has gone to FC Montpellier in French Ligue 1. Mazembe have lost their three DRC Leopards stars Jonathan Bolingi, Merveille Bope and Christian Luyindama who have moved to Belgian side Standard Liege on loan. Ivorian international has also left the Lubumbashi side for a Swiss club Young Boys. But Mosimane knows that they will still come strong with players like Rainford Kalaba and prodigal son Tresor Mputu. The game will take place at Loftus stadium in Pretoria on Saturday, kicking-off at 7pm. Whilst Sundowns only recorded their maiden star last year, Mazembe are four times African champions. But Mosimane feels that, South Africa, which has only been back in international football for 25years, is doing well at this level.
