Featuring in his seventh African Cup of Nations tournament, Ghanaian national team captain Asamoah Gyan is the not only the most experienced player in this Black Stars squad but also the most feared. When Ghana takes on their hoodoo team Uganda in the opening Group D game in Port Gentil tonight (6pm), Gyan will equal the number of tournaments played by the great Abedi Pele who played in six AFCONS. Gyan believes that their strength this year lies in the continuity of their squad from the last AFCON. Gyan has lost two AFCON finals with the Black Stars in 2010 against Egypt and 2015 to Ivory Coast, as they prepare to meet the Ugandan Cranes who have a better record against them in the last four matches, the 31year-old striker is banking on their experience in this tourney to carry them through. This is Grant’s second AFCON tournament with Ghana having finished as runners-up in Equatorial Guinea losing to Ivory Coast in the final two years ago. Gyan sees the Israeli born coach as more of a teacher and a motivator. The last three meetings between Ghana and Uganda have ended in two draws and a win for the Cranes with the most recent game being a one-all draw during a World Cup qualifier in Tamale three months ago. There will also be a strong South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) representation in this game with four players in contention for a starting berth. Grant has got a picture of what to expect from Milutin “Micho” Sredojevic’s side who are playing in their first AFCON in 39 years.
