The Mamelodi Sundowns technical team and players are in unison, the results of this FIFA Club World Cup, particularly the 4-1 hammering today in Osaka, Japan ----at the hands of South Korea and Asian champions Jeonbuk Hyundai, exactly where South African club football stands globally. Sundowns who were the first Southern African team to participate in this tournament after being crowned as African Champions two months ago, finished sixth in this Club World. Head coach Pitso Mosimane had warned that the South Koreans were going to be stronger than their opening game and it became worse than that. In the opening game (a quarterfinal) Sundowns had wasted several goal-scoring chances in the first-half and succumbed to J-League champions Kashima Antlers 2-0 who gave a spirited second half performance. After seeing his side trailing 3-0 at half-time, Sibusiso Vilakazi was brought in at half-time and helped to bring his club back into the game as they found a consolation goal through Percy Tau. The Bafana international is no stranger to international football and says the lessons learnt here will benefit everyone back home. Sundowns, who are also the South African champions, won the league twice in the last four years and managed to be runners-up in the same period, have dominated local football. And it’s understandable why Mosimane would say, this also reflects on the standard of club football back home in relation to the world. Last year’s African champions TP Mazembe were blown away another J-League champion Sanfrecce Hiroshima 3-0 in the opening game and lost the fifth place play-off 2-1 to Club America of Mexico. It’s been four years since an African team last reached the last four in this tournament, Uganda international goalkeeper Denis Onyango hasn’t been at his best in this tournament and has more on what led to their failure to win here.
