Bafana Bafana head coach Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba has admitted that his side was lucky to escape with a point from the opening game of 2018 World Cup third and final round qualifying campaign against Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou this past weekend. Bafana were held to a 1-all draw by the hosts who equalized deep into injury time after Dean Furman had scored 10 minutes from full-time. Speaking in Durban yesterday afternoon, where Bafana play an international friendly against Ghana at Moses Mabhida stadium tonight, the 11th of October 2016. Senegal are now leading Group D with three points after beating Cape Verde 2-0 at home on Saturday and Bafana have got their work cut out for them in their fixture at home against the Terranga Lions. Mashaba comments on the two points lost, but doesn’t seem to understand the rules of the World Cup qualifiers, unlike CAF, FIFA does not use head to head but the goal difference system mainly in case two or more teams are equal on points. And the away goal rule in this particular instance becomes irrelevant, as this is not a two-legged tie but a round robin stage with four teams and only group winners will qualify for Russia 2018.
