South Africa’s women’s national team soccer coach Vera Pauw says that people should not compare her team with the 2012 London Olympics crop. Joseph Mkhonza’s team qualified for the Olympics for the first time four years ago but they finished rock bottom in a group comprising of Sweden, Japan and Canada. Pauw’s team will be looking to rewrite their own history in Rio, Brazil on August, but they are in a very tough group featuring the hosts Brazil, Sweden and China. Banyana failed to qualify for the FIFA World cup in Canada last year, which was a huge disappointment after the Olympic qualification four years ago. Pauw’s team has been preparing for the Olympics with the high profile teams such as the Netherlands, and the USA, whom they will be playing this weekend. While the team should be focusing on the Olympics, Pauw revealed that there are more pressing issues behind the scenes. She took a swipe at Sascoc (the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee)‚ saying that four players and four technical staff have been left stranded without accreditation and accommodation in the Olympic Village.The 53 year old feminine coah admitted that those challenges will impact negatively on the team’s chances of doing well in the global games. But she is hoping that the players will put on a good show despite the challenges.
