Mamelodi Sundowns have taken a giant step towards qualifying for the CAF Confederation Cup group stages, after beating Medeama Sporting Club from Ghana in a comeback 3-1 victory, in the playoff first leg match played at the Lucas Moripe stadium in Atteridgeville on Saturday night, 07 May 2016. Eric Kwakwa opened the scoring for the visitors in the second minute. But the home team scored three goals in the last ten minutes of the match, with the goals coming from Leonardo Castro, Khama Billiat and Cuthbert Malajila. Coach Pitso Mosimane says the first half was the worst he has seen from his team, and therefore decided to give his players silent treatment during the break. Versatile player Mzikayise Mashaba had a sterling game in the middle of the park alongside Hlompho Kekana. He was unlucky not to score when he rattled the post in the first half. He says they felt bad with the lethargic performance in the first half and needed to show courage in the second half as the newly crowned Absa Premiership champions. There were reports from the Ghana press that Medeama coach Tom Strand would not come to South Africa, suggesting that he was banned from travelling with the team, when he allegedly absconded from training, and two league games. But Strand was on the bench and felt that his team got tired late in the match. He also believes that the third goal was offside.
