The South African Sports Confederation And Olympic Committee (SASCOC) has thrown the challenge to all major South African cities to start preparing a bid for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. With the real benefits of sports tourism having been already experienced from the hosting of global sporting event in the past, South Africa will aim to remain on the world map and SASCOC and all stakeholders have identified the 2022 Games as the next target according to SASCOC CEO Tubby Reddy. Sports tourism accounted for 10% of last year’s 9.2 million visitors to South Africa and with that in mind the need to host more events in the country has been realised. SASCOC announced along with all stakeholders in the resolutions made at the Sports and Tourism Indaba the need for a national bidding and hosting strategy up to 2030 in line with the national development plan of the country.
