Master bassist and composer Carlo Mombelli is one of South Africa’s most impressive jazz innovators. His music has been described by BBC Radio Three as "…hauntingly beautiful South African music woven with improvisations, soundscapes and poetry" and his album Press My Spine To The Ground was chosen as one of the radio station's 12 best albums of 2016. Other critics have praised Mombelli's music as being "disconcertingly beautiful", "unusually and unexpectedly fresh" and "visionary, emotional and experimental". In short he is quite simply one of South Africa's most outstanding contemporary jazz performers.
