The United States has echoed the United Nations in welcoming and supporting the engagement of the African Union in facilitating a peaceful resolution to the post-election crisis in Gabon. The AU earlier expressed a willingness to send a delegation led by current Chairperson Chadian President Idriss Deby to Libreville after deadly riots last week sparked by disputes over the election results. Provisional results handed incumbent President Ali Bongo victory by less than 6000 votes with opposition leader Jean Ping claiming fraud.
