New Springbok backline coach Franco Smith says burning the candle on both ends with his job as Cheetahs head coach will pose as a challenge but it can only help improve him as a coach and benefit the national team as well. Smith has taken over from discarded Mzwandile Stick after joining the national team during their end of year tour to Europe last year on a consultancy basis. Smith was speaking at the Springboks training camp currently underway in Johannesburg. Smith emphasized the need for all South African Super Rugby franchises to work together with the common goal of making sure the Springboks come first. Smith says that all franchise coaches have embraced a ball-in-hand approach which has been evident in the first two rounds of Super Rugby. The involvement of all coaches and players especially with the training camps will be to the benefit of the Springboks and the players Smith said. Smith says the benefit of having the training camps is to inculcate the Boks style of play to the players and to also help improve the players’ skills. He goes on to say, it’s also to get them well prepared long before the Springboks first Test against France in June.
