This is Nate, aka KingBear aka BabyBear2004, I just wanted to make a quick post to talk a bit about myself. I am a 30 something gamer on the west coast. I grew up with a basic computer playing anything from “Reading Rabbit” to “Oregon Trails” depending on the year/my age. My father was also a big gamer, I remember growing up and watching him play Super Mario Bros on the Nintendo. I remember occasionally playing myself as well. From there I went on to other games and other consoles. We eventually upgraded our PC to a Hewlett Packard running on a 14.4 kb modem, eventually upgrading to the 28.8 and then finally DSL. My family wasnt well off, but they seemed to know computers were the future so they did their best to keep getting us technology as we grew up.

There were 3 kids in that house, so you can imagine, the cost of gaming would have been high if they bought us each a PC or Console, so we were lucky to have the “Family Computer” where we sat down at night on occasion and played “Wizardry 8”. When we werent sitting down as a family, I played a game that I can only remember being called “Birthrite”, it was my first introduction to RTS (real time strategy) and world building.

As I grew, and my parents grew apart, my taste in games evolved with the times. I eventually moved onto playing Command and Conquer and Starcraft and Warcraft 3. As you can tell I was a fan of RTS games. We also had an N64 and played A LOT of Goldeneye N64. I’m sure most of you remember this game.

Well, time went on, I continued playing games. My computer got a bit better as well and I evolved into playing First Person Shooters. Call of Duty Modern Warfare and Battlefield 1942 were my main 2 for a while, at least until my computer decided that it didnt want to work for me anymore. That’s when I switched to Console and was introduced to Halo. Fast forward to about 7 years ago, I’m at Gamestop looking for a new game and the guy behind the counter tells me about this new game that was in the middle of Beta Testing and it was made by the same company that made Halo. This piqued my interest, I went home and signed up for the beta, you may have guessed the game by now, just in case though, that game was Destiny. I was hooked.

When the full game was release, I obviously bought it. And as the expansions came out, I bought those too. I was part of the group of players that liked to complain about how we had spent $60ish each time a new expansion came out and the new players were getting the same content as us without the added expense of the previous expansions. To this day though, I still feel like the Vault of Glass raid was one of the best pieces of gaming released, the mechanics were amazing and fun. Hiding from the Gorgons was tense, challenging ourselves to kill as many Gorgons as we could before getting wiped was also a thing we did. Then comes the jumping puzzle. Oh boy that was fun as a Titan "You know, you can just jump across the gap if you do it just right.” “Really? Challenge accepted” and in true titan fashion I leapt without thinking. I died a few times but eventually made it. After that point, I probably had a 90% success rate on that jump and it was fun each and every time. It turned into a race with my buddies, trying to make it to the door before each other. I easily put 1000 hours into my Titan and another 1000+ combined on my other two characters by the time the Crota raid came out.

I played off and on throughout the years before taking a long hiatus due to life getting in the way. About a year or so ago, I got back into Destiny, this time on Destiny 2. In my Destiny days, I was single and young and carefree. I would stay up until 2 or 3am gaming with my buddies while working a job that I didnt care about. My life basically involved playing Destiny and working. Now that I am older, I am a homeowner, have a high stress full-time job that pays much better and I am married. Our house is about 70+ years old and we have a decently sized property. So during the week and on the weekends my wife and I spend quite a bit of time just trying to maintain our property and spend time with each other. And when we’re not doing that, we’re just trying to relax. So ultimately our game time really only boils down to us jumping on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon/morning. And here we are.

So join Josh and I as we talk about what it’s like to be a “Weekend Guardian”. We will also be talking about the difficulties of raising a family and the communities concerns with the state of the game. We will also do our best to talk about “What should you do with your limited time to make the best of the time you have”. Looking forward to talking to our fans. See you out there Guardians!
