It’s one of the handful of countries competing for the title of ‘closest to the equator. There you’ll find sandy desert, shrubby savannah, and lush rainforest. It has an incredible complex past, over the past 2 thousand years been conquered by many African kingdoms and European nations. But in 1957, it became the first self-governing country on the African continent under president Kwame Nkrumah to gain its Independence.
