Tennis legend Wayne Ferreira was thrust into a consultancy role as the SA Davis Cup team beat Estonia 4-1 in a Euro Africa Group II tie this weekend. South Africa has been struggling to make World Group and Ferreira says it is important to start tapping into the knowledge of former greats to improve the game and he has already begun these conversations with Tennis SA CEO Richard Glover. At the peak of his career, Ferreira reached top ten singles ranking in the world along with his 15 major titles. The US based great says SA Davis Cup Captain Marcus Ondruska was a major factor in him coming to join the SA team. Ondruska believes former players like Ferreira are a great resource for our current crop of tennis players to tap from. With a capacity crowd at Irene Country Club, Ferreira says this shows that the enthusiasm for tennis is still there and that should be the basis to rebuild the momentum and take the sport forward.
