400m world record holder Wayde van Niekerk believes that Usain Bolt’s Olympic gold medal loss will not tarnish anything he has achieved and done for track and field in his illustrious career as the fastest man ever. The 30-year-old Bolt was recently stripped off his 2016 Rio Olympics 4x100m relay gold medal after Jamaican long time teammate Nesta Carter had tested positive for banned substances. Van Niekerk, who has become good friends with Bolt since his rise to stardom, says Bolt has set the bar to new heights and no one can take any credit away form what he has done. The reigning world and Olympic champions, Van Niekerk, reaffirmed his ambitions of running short distance sprints as well adding the 100 and the 200m to his event as well. Speaking to SABC Sport Journalist Thando Gqamane at the Adidas Creator Squad Training Experience in Cape Town, Van Niekerk says he is committed to the process. With South Africa brimming with young budding sprinters in the likes of Gift Leatlelo, Clarence Munyai, Henrico Breintjies, to mention a few, Van Niekerk says he is ready for the extra push on the track. He also calls on South Africans to get behind the country’s young sprinters and support them.
