The Swaziland Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (SOCGA) named a 12-man Commonwealth Games squad to represent the country in Glasgow, Scotland. Team Swaziland comprises of five sporting disciplines being athletics, swimming, judo, boxing and cycling. King Mswati 11 has urged the team to perform to the best of their abilities to ensure they make Swazis proud. Swaziland joined the Commonwealth in 1968 and made its debut in Edinburg 1970 Games. The training programme for athletics - Sibusiso ‘Swazi Bolt’ Matsenjwa, Mlandvo Shongwe and France-based Phumlile Ndzinisa remain on track. The squad went to camp from July 12 to July 14 and will depart the country on July 20, to Glasgow, Scotland for the competition which starts on July 26 until August 3.

Meanwhile, the squad’s Chef de Mission is SOCGA Board member and National Football Association of Swaziland (NFAS) Mthethwa, remains upbeat, declaring that the Swazi athletes would win medals in Glasgow.

The first Commonwealth medal for Swaziland was secured in 1974 by Richard Mabuza, who picked up a bronze medal in the Men’s Marathon event. Then in Melbourne 2006, Simanga Shiba won bronze medal in Men’s Light Flyweight boxing division. Overall Swaziland has scooped four bronze medals in the Commonwealth. Journalist: Coudjoe Amankwaa
