Many people struggle with delegation, including supervisors and managers. Why is this? Because individuals who are promoted into leadership were once outstanding individual performers, so they know they can perform with excellence. However, to be an effective leader, you also need to trust your employees to perform at that same level. We recognize that delegation always involves risk, but that is why it is key to select the right person to take on specific tasks to ensure excellence. Part of delegation involves trusting an individual to complete a task, which is why it is also important to ask for a commitment from that employee. After all, to achieve greatness, people must be willing to make sacrifices. Hear from Larry Sternberg and Kim Turnage this week on delegation and commitments in the workplace on this episode of “Managing to Make a Difference.”
