Chris Hani, a struggle icon in South Africa, was one of the feared individual by the apartheid regime at the height of the arms struggle in South Africa. He went into exile and joined the MK (Mkhonto We Sizwe- the military wing of ANC in exile) and became the Chief-of Staff.

The Wankie Sipolilo Campaign was, arguably, another way of the trained MK soldiers to find a way of infiltrating the enemy –the South Africa forces. This was the first series of contacts between a combined MK/ZIPRA (Zimbabwe People’s Revolutionary Army) unit armed with modern weapons, and the joint security forces of Rhodesia.
