A report released by the South African Human Rights Commission and the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities Rights Commission has found that the 2021 unrest was racially-driven between Black and Indian community members. The two organisations say investigations into widespread looting and violence began in KwaZulu-Natal and spread to Gauteng. Over 300 people were killed in the violence which cost the country billions in lost revenue. CRL Rights Commission chairperson, Professor David Musoma says inequality between the two communities was also noted.
