The mother of one of the victims of the Life Esidimeni tragedy has told of how she was not allowed to fetch her son from a ward at an NGO he had been transferred to during the Gauteng Health Department's Marathon Project. In a heartbreaking testimony, Miriam Monayane, the mother of Thabo Monyan, broke down when she recalled the state in which she found her son. She said four nurses wheeled her son to her while he lay on his bed. The Life Esidimeni hearings are looking into the deaths of 143 mental healthcare patients. Monayane broke down several times during her testimony.
