It has emerged that a total of 141 mental patients have died since their transfer from the Life Esidimeni hospital to NGOs around Gauteng. This has been confirmed by the Acting Head of the Health Department in Gauteng Dr. Enerst Kenoshi who is testifying before former Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke in the arbitration process between the families of the deceased and the state. The number of deaths was at 118 at the time of the release of the Health Ombudsman's report in February this year, but 23 more people have since died.
