There are conflicting reports about the number of people who have died during the storms in KwaZulu-Natal. Authorities hosted a media briefing this afternoon saying eight people have died. But new information has since come to light stating that 14 people are dead. Police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala has confirmed the deaths of 11 people while emergency services have confirmed the deaths of three others, bringing the total to 14. Among the dead are a four-year-old girl from Isipingo and a 12-year-old boy who was swept away in a stream at Izingolweni near Port Shepstone on the south coast. Head of Communication at the KwaZulu-Natal Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Department Mthatheni Mabaso says the storm took them by surprise.
