The Council for Geo-Sciences has confirmed that there was an earth tremor just five kilometres away from the Geldenhuys pedestrian bridge which collapsed over the N3 highway near Germiston east of Johannesburg yesterday. Five people were injured as the bridge fell onto four vehicles in the early hours. Professor Mitchell Gohnert, from the Wits University School of Civil and Environmental Engineering says this incident could be because of lack of maintenance of infrastructure.
