A political analyst says the controversial statements that the ANCWL continues to make are undermining the agenda that seeks to achieve gender equality. This follows reports that the organisation took a delegation that included six men to the ANC Policy Conference currently underway in Nasrec, South of Johannesburg. The league's president Bathabile Dlamini is said to have justified the move by saying the league needed men because they are not emotional. The organisation has since released a statement denying the report. This was not the first controversial comment that the league has made on uplifting women. In 2013 they said that South Africa was not ready for a female president. It was only last year that they backed Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma as their preferred candidate for president. Senior Research Associate at the Institute for Global Dialogue Sanusha Naidoo gave us her perspective on the issue.
