The South African Poultry Association says there are no concerns about humans contracting the Avian Flu that has affected some parts of the country. There is an outbreak on farms in Mpumalanga and the Free State. Hundreds of chicken have been culled in an attempt to contain the spread of the disease. Zimbabwe, Namibia, Mozambique and Botswana are among countries that have banned chickens from South Africa, but the association's CEO Kevin Lovell says the countries are within their rights to do so because this is standard procedure when there is an outbreak of such a disease. We also spoke to Senior Lecturer at the University of KwaZulu Natal Dr. Loyd Baiyegunhi about the economic impact of this outbreak.
