The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA), in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) is launching US$ 4.22 million worth waste-to-energy project in Pretoria today. The objective of the project is to promote and accelerate the adoption of biogas as a complementary energy source to contribute to the South African energy supply mix. The project was conceived soon after South Africa hosted the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Seventeenth Conference of Parties (COP 17), in 2011.
