Wits University Vice Chancellor Adam Habib has accused student leaders of engaging in the 'politics of spectacle' and, not, principle. He was speaking at a press briefing today, to call off an historic general assembly. The assembly was expected to reveal a 'pledge' in which the university promised to march alongside students to demand free, quality, decolonised, higher education for all. The pledge puts the blame squarely at the feet of government for disinvesting in higher education and pricing poor South Africans out of the system. Habib says the students demands are legitimate but some compromises are needed. Dhashen Moodley spoke with WITS SRC Secretary General Fasiha Hassan about why they failed to find common ground.
