Many African governments have begun discussing Africa Data Policy standards as many more than half of Africa's 54 countries have no data protection or privacy laws, according to London-based rights group Article 19. And, of the 14 countries that do, nine have no regulators to enforce them. The topic has been highly debated following the African Union's Convention on Cyber-security and Personal Data Protection earlier this year. The uproar around data privacy was further amplified by revelations that data mining company Cambridge Analytica harvested millions of Facebook profiles and worked to fix elections in Kenya and Nigeria.
