Often in Baptist churches, we hear the terminology “once saved, always saved,” which is theologically accurate. Nevertheless, the application of this “mantra” has been abused or distorted to mean that everyone who makes a profession of faith has genuine possession of saving faith.
There is a difference between those who “PROFESS” faith in Christ and those who truly “POSSESS” faith in Christ. The Bible teaches that true believers can sometimes temporarily fall away, but their faith does not completely or permanently fail. What is the doctrine of eternal security? How does God sustain us to the end?

In Chapter 18 of the 1689 London Baptist Confession, the opening sentence states, "Temporary believers and other unregenerate people may deceive themselves in vain with false hopes and fleshly presumptions that they have God’s favor and salvation, but their hope will perish."
What are "temporary believers?" Does the Bible teach a category of a person who professes faith for a time, but falls away because they never possessed genuine saving faith in the first place?
Dr. Sean Cole teaches the parable of the soils from Luke 8 to explain what the Confession and the Bible mean by "temporary believers."

Good works flow from a changed heart where a sinner has repented and trusted in Jesus. Good works are the fruit of our salvation, not the root. Good works do not save us; we are saved for good works. What exactly are good works? How do we avoid legalism? Can we perform good works in and of ourselves, or do we need power from the Holy Spirit? How does God view our good works? Does Acts 13:48 teach that faith is the result of predestination? Or does it teach that those saved were "predisposed" to believe in Jesus? Provisionists and Arminians argue that this passage teaches that sinners were "predisposed" to accept the gospel because they were contrite or had a soft heart prior to regeneration. Sinners placed themselves in a position to accept the gospel because they had humble and contrite hearts that believed in what revelation they had been given.
Dr. Sean Cole interacts with this passage, which shows God's unconditional election of sinners before the foundation of the world. He also reads a portion of John Calvin's commentary, which provides excellent insights into God's sovereign choice to save sinners.

As Emmanuel Baptist Church continues to see new people visiting every Sunday, Pastor Sean and the elders are reintroducing the Discipleship Pathway as the primary strategy for disciple-making. In this sermon, Sean focuses on the first two steps of the pathway: (1) Worship Biblically and (2) Connect Relationally.
Worship Biblically: We desire disciples to WORSHIP Biblically together on Sundays for expository preaching, observing baptism and the Lord’s supper, singing, confession of sin, and prayer.
Connect Relationally: We desire you to CONNECT Relationally in a Growth Group for Bible study, prayer, fellowship, mutual care, and encouragement.
Although this process is specific to Emmanuel, the Discipleship Pathway is a biblical model that will encourage you and your church to focus on obeying the Great Commission.

The Protestant Reformation started when Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the door of the Wittenberg church in Germany. Listen to the first sentence: “Our Lord and Master Jesus Christ, in saying ‘Repent and believe the gospel’ meant that the whole life of the believer to be an act of repentance.”
What is repentance? How is repentance distinct from saving faith? Is repentance necessary for salvation?

Do you want to merely be happy or blessed? Is there a difference between experiencing the blessing of God and happiness? What does it mean to be truly blessed by God?
Here is this Psalm's main point or central idea: The LORD blesses those who live FOR Him and LIKE Him.
What describes the person the LORD blesses? The answer: You live FOR Him.
What is the overall lifestyle of the person the LORD blesses? The answer: You live LIKE Him.
What is the future of the person under God’s judgment, not His blessing? The answer we find in verse 10: Eternal hell.
The word “Righteous” is repeated in this Psalm.
Verse 3—his righteousness endures forever.
Verse 4—he is righteous.
Verse 6—the righteous will never be moved.
Verse 9—his righteousness endures forever.
How do you become righteous? What does this mean?
Can you produce this righteousness in yourself? Can you attain this righteousness by being good or obeying the Ten Commandments?
We need righteousness that comes from outside of us—a righteousness given to us as a gift of grace. We call this the doctrine of justification by faith alone. Through God’s grace, we are justified and counted as righteous. God declares us NOT Guilty and forever accepts us as forgiven in His sight.

Does the Old Testament, and in particular, the Psalms, prophesy or mention the Second Coming of Christ?
Here is the main point of this Psalm: Christ will return as the universal King over all the earth.
How do you respond to King Jesus? What is your reaction to his absolute sovereignty and His Second Coming?
This is an Old Testament prophetic Psalm pointing toward the Second Coming of Christ. It has many parallels with the Book of Revelation.

Dr. Sean Cole concludes the sermon series in Ruth. What have we learned from this wonderful book?
First, it has been regarded as the best short story in literature.
Second, it is the story of God's invisible Hand of sovereignty. We’ve seen God’s invisible hand of grace orchestrate events that, at first glance, appeared to be just “coincidences” and “luck.” The storyteller uses metaphors and plays on words to capture our attention on this issue.
Third, it is a story of redemption and grace. The word “redeem” or “redeemer” appears 23 times, and the keyword that is the theme of this book is “hesed”—that loyal kindness that God shows to His people and that Ruth shows to both Naomi and Boaz.
Fourth, it is crucial to the history of redemption to ensure that David would be born and become Israel’s greatest king.
Ultimately, this story has its fulfillment in Christ. If there were not Ruth, there would be no Jesus!
Jesus is our Redeemer and King of kings!

In this bizarre marriage proposal, we see the integrity of Boaz and the godly submission of Ruth. Although Boaz is a kinsman-redeemer, he throws a monkey wrench into the situation when he tells Ruth there is another man who is in line in front of him to redeem Ruth. Judges 17-19 show Israel engaged in gross idolatry and immorality. There is no king in Israel. Everyone was doing what was right in their own eyes. There is flagrant rebellion. Open sin. No spiritual leadership and a nation in chaos.
God called Israel to be a holy nation, and their primary goal was to be a light to the nations around them and not to adopt the ways of the pagan Canaanites.
As we move into Chapter 20, we see the twelve tribes' response to the outrageous sin in Chapter 19.
Here is the central idea or main point of this chapter: You must deal with sin quickly before it gets out of control.

Dr. Sean Cole interacts with Leighton Flowers of Soteriology 101 and the Provisionist understanding of Ezekiel 36:25-27. Flowers asserts that God will give you a new heart IF YOU ADMIT you need a new heart. God responds to our libertarian free will decision to want a new heart by then regenerating us in response to our faith. Sean also interacts with an article from the Society of Evangelical Arminians on this Ezekiel passage that also makes faith the condition for God to give us this new heart. How does Jesus in John 3:1-8 directly address the promises in Ezekiel? And why do both passages teach that regeneration comes BEFORE faith? Listen and find out.

Judges 19 is perhaps the most disturbing passage in the Bible. The subject matter is R-rated and contains some graphic depictions of human depravity.
Here is the main point of this disastrous chapter: When God’s people fail to submit to Jesus as Lord, they can commit outrageous acts of immorality. Ultimately, this chapter should move us to MOURN and GRIEVE over the sinfulness of sin and its devastating consequences. How does this passage apply to us (1) individually? (2) as a church? and (3) as a nation under God's judgment?

Dr. Sean Cole continues the teaching series through the 1689 Second London Baptist Confession. He addresses Chapter 13 on Sanctification.
The best way to understand the difference between justification and sanctification is to consider what the Reformers said: “Christ is FOR us”—that is justification. “Christ is IN us”—that is sanctification.
We can think of sanctification in two categories:
Positional: We are permanently set apart as holy in our salvation because God has regenerated us and given us the Holy Spirit to live inside of us.
Progressive: While we cannot lose our salvation, we still struggle with sin. The Holy Spirit will progressively and continuously make us more holy and rid us of the pollution of sin in our lives.
