The pressure on Joe Biden to step down is growing extremely intense. A neurologist appeared on NBC and stated emphatically that he has Parkinson’s. George Clooney has publicly asked him to step aside. All the cable anchors – most especially Chuck Todd and Jake Tapper – are going after him tooth-and-toenail. His polls are sinking like a stone in a pond. And yet Biden clings to office. The office is a public trust and the trust is gone. But then I am not sure Biden views the office that way.

We live in a country that increasingly thinks everything is some sort of entitlement. I cannot tell you how many of my clients complain, “No one wants to work anymore.” People increasingly think a job is some sort of right or reward, rather than a means to earn compensation. They think they own their jobs. Clearly Joe Biden thinks the presidency is his. Joe Biden is acting as both exemplar and example – he is setting a tone and reflecting it. The problem is none of it is productive. Jobs “belong” to employers and the presidency belongs to the people.

Joe Biden is giving a “Big Boy” presser this afternoon. The press is likely to resemble a school of sharks in a pool of chum. The presser is Biden’s opportunity to earn the public trust once again. His defiant letter to Democratic Congresspersons acted as if the presidency was his to lose, forgetting entirely that it has never been his, it has only ever been on loan – and right now the loan is being called. If he approaches the press with that same attitude this evening his future will be grim indeed.

But given that analysis we need to ask ourselves how we got into this mess – and not just the one in the White House. How did a nation forged from nothing come to take so much for granted? How did our citizens come to think of themselves as somehow entitled to a job and livelihood? (Whether that job is as an Uber driver or the presidency.) It’s not even just about jobs anymore. Grade inflation has allowed students to come to expect to pass, not work for it. Many students graduate high school without the ability to read and understand this blog – not just some esoteric point of regulation or law, but the most basic sentences and paragraphs. How did we get there?

The reasons in schools are myriad – from harassing parents to funding for results. Graduates simply carry the expectation from school to work. But what is going on in the presidency is both simpler and more complex. As simplicity, Joe Biden thinks the job is a reward for decades of service. It has always been fascinating to me that Biden is really a presidential loser – failing to win his party’s nomination at least twice and having never really started when early whispers told him not to bother any number of other times. The man has lusted after the job for forty years. I think he thinks it is his by virtue of wanting so much for so long. Complex in the politics of the moment created by a Democratic Party built as much on deception as reality. Biden is a stalking horse set up to appear palatable while behind the scenes liberals instituted policies completely unacceptable had they been run on.

Well, the stalking horse is falling apart before our eyes. As graduates soon learn they have to earn their pay – so the liberals behind the stalking horse will learn that if they want to change the world they have to convince the people to change – not dictate the change from above.
