Yesterday was a day of seeming miracles. The Democratic Party coalesced behind Kamala Harris amazingly fast – perhaps even miraculously so. After days of rock-hard stonewalling Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle did a rapid 180 and resigned. Things do not fully add up here – things are happening way too fast and way too suddenly.
Kamala Harris is a deeply flawed candidate. Confronted with an opportunity to replace the even more flawed Joe Biden, you would think Democrats might put a little more effort into the replacement. For things to come together this fast for Kamala Harris it seems like there would have to be some prep work. She seemingly pulled unity from chaos in roughly 36 hours – nobody is that good. The ducks had to be very close to in their row for them to line up that rapidly.
“Defiant” is not strong enough a word to describe Kimberly Cheatle’s congressional testimony on Monday. She clearly did not care. She was woefully unprepared – as if she already knew she was going to resign and she was just buying time until that eventuality. But what was she buying time for?
The events of the last ten days or so, beginning with the attempted assassination of Donald Trump moving forward to this morning are going to forever be the subject of conspiracy theories. We will learn more as time goes forward, but we will never learn all of it – it will never all add up into a clear and concise picture. Even if “the riddle” of each individual event comes to light, someone will try to connect the dots and it is possible there simply is no connection. But nature hates a vacuum and there is clearly a vacuum here, so into it will flow all sorts of stuff.
That said, I think it is fair to say that somewhere in this mess is corruption. I choose that word carefully. It can cover anything from a simple attempt to avoid accountability for ineptitude, to covering tracks for things worse, to hardcore, money-grabbing graft and/or murder. We don’t know, we probably will never know details with certainty, but I think we can say that somewhere in this out-of-focus picture is something wrong.
That leaves one with a great sense of unease and discontent. Our strongest desire in such situations is to dig, find the corruption and punish it. It seems like the only way we can find the emotional peace we desire is clear up the picture and correct the flaws. But that is unlikely to ever happen – there will always be some portion of this picture that will not come into focus and at least some of the corruption in this mess will hide in that portion. Earthly justice is often imperfect, and God’s justice is often delayed to far beyond our vision.
So what to do? How do we find peace? Well, the blessing of this country is that even if we cannot punish the corruption, we can take it out of a position to harm the nation. That’s what elections are all about. Our curiosity will never be satisfied, but we can find peace by making sure the government is comprised of a different bunch. You want to ease the discomfiture you feel right now? Work to elect Donald Trump, it is just that simple.
Now, let’s be frank and honest. Donald Trump has his own personal corruptions – they are well known – and that is the point. Not to mention that the team he will bring is itself in far better focus that the bunch currently operating behind a smokescreen of obstinance, obfuscation and flat-out lying.
The best king the ancient nation of Israel ever enjoyed – the one blessed by God and from which Christ was descended – was a murderous adulterer. And everyone knew it. And that again is the point. There was no fuzzy, indistinct picture behind which King David’s corruption hid. His corruption was in full view and known to all. I will not claim divine ordination for Donald Trump, even if God’s providence is most evident in his escape from death at a shooter’s hand. But I will note that analogous to King David, his corruption is known to all. And that is a huge difference.
We’ll never know what corruption lies behind the events of recent days, not fully. But we can elect Donald Trump and not have to worry about it anymore.
