It is quite difficult to digest the news this morning. The Israeli invasion of Lebanon is a world changing event. There is a VP debate tonight. Our response to covid changed the moon. (I grow weary of stories that attribute this to “covid.” The virus did nothing to the moon – our actions in light of the virus did this. It’s us, we need to own it.) The suffering here in my neck of the woods – Southern Appalachia – post Helene is immense and federal response is slow. They are using mule trains to bring in supplies, for crying out loud. Where in the heck is the National Guard and airlifts??!?!?! The skies over my home should be full of helicopters with slings of supplies hanging from them on their way to the real devastation.
One must wonder where God fits into a puzzle like this. And therein lies some interesting stories.
Over the weekend:
Mother Jones editor-in-chief Clara Jeffery faced endless mockery on social media after she shared a Friday anecdote in which she complained a flight attendant wished her and others a “blessed” evening after a safe flight to San Francisco….
Jeffery took to her X (formerly Twitter) account to write: “Creeping Christian nationalism alert: @AlaskaAir flight attendant just wished us a ‘blessed’ night as we landed in SFO (!) to groans. Other adjectives that would have sufficed: great, awesome, fabulous, amazing, fantastic…
As my rowmate said, ‘this ain’t Montgomery, sweetie.'”
The world, and apparently the moon, is falling apart and this woman is worried about being blessed? (Now you know what “San Francisco liberals” are really like.) I find it fascinating that some people do not just oppose religion but are clearly phobic at mere hints of it. You see, being blessed implies a deity to provide the blessing and how dare this flight attendant even imply there is a God?! As the idiomatic phrase here in the South goes “Bless their hearts.”
And sometimes the phobia turns to hate:
An unhinged former staff member at the University of Kentucky floated the idea that the death and destruction Hurricane Helene unleashed on red states was divine retribution for their residents’ support of former President Donald Trump.
“Hurricane Helene…what if GOD is punishing MAGA populations for their hate and hypocrisy? Works for me!” Betsy Packard wrote Sunday in a heartless post on X punctuated with a winking emoji.
WOW! How do you even respond to such bitter hatred? Firstly, is God that indiscriminate? I know any number of Harris supporters that are suffering around here right alongside all those MAGA types. Interestingly, they are working together to survive. I saw a massive “Harris/Walz” sign in Bristol Tennessee weekend before last and I am quite sure given its location, it was swept away in the flooding. I also seem to recall any number of people invoking God when Trump survived an assassination attempt. So, whose side is God really on?
What’s interesting to me is that if you love God, are afraid of the mere hint of Him, or think Him an instrument of your hatred – He is always in the conversation. If there is no God, why do people worry about Him so much?
God is at work – even if we are resisting it.
